Frequently asked questions

About Frogans technology

What does Frogans mean?

It’s not clear what the roots of the Frogans word are but we like the name because it is distinctive and easily remembered.

Can anything called Frogans be serious?

Very serious indeed: the Frogans project started in 1999 and Frogans technology will open to the general public in a few months as one of the few software layers on the Internet, alongside the World Wide Web and Email.

Is Frogans sexy?

Frogans sites are always simple, fast and safe to navigate. They are visually creative, intuitive and fun to navigate.  Publishers love that they only have to develop and maintain one version of their site, with the guarantee that it will work for their audience, no matter their device and their bandwidth.

For a large portion of the 4 billion-strong population that is connected to the Internet, it is also sexy to publish and consume content in their native language.

Who owns Frogans?

Frogans is an open standard of the Internet (see ICANN’s case study).

It is held, promoted and protected by the OP3FT, a non-profit working for the public interest. The OP3FT also owns the Frogans Core Registry (FCR), the database in which Frogans addresses and Frogans networks are registered, and has delegated its technical and commercial operation to the FCR Operator.

The Frogans Addresses For All service is independent from ICANN, the OP3FT and the FCR Operator. This web site allows its registered users to register and manage their own portfolio of Frogans addresses and Frogans networks registered in the FCR.

How come I have never heard about Frogans until now?

Frogans technology is currently emerging from its research and development phase and is about to be open the general public. The spread of Frogans technology within the technical community is underway on a global basis.

More information about the phases of the Frogans project at https://project.frogans.org/

Does Frogans work in all countries?

Frogans does indeed work everywhere. It is an open standard for the Internet, available to all users, in any language.

How can I visit and navigate Frogans sites?

Frogans sites can be visited with Frogans Player. Frogans Player is a free-of-charge, secure and fast-loading software developed and updated by the OP3FT.

Downloading and using Frogans Player takes place without any personal data being collected by the OP3FT.

Where can I find published Frogans sites?

In a few months, you will be able to visit Frogans sites by clicking on Frogans addresses found on web pages, in e-mail messages or even within mobile apps. If Frogans Player is not yet installed on your device, you will be asked to authorize its installation before opening the site.

If allowed by its publisher, the content of any given Frogans site can be indexed by search engines. You will be able to access Frogans sites by simply clicking on their Frogans address in the search results page.

In the meantime, the first catalogs of Frogans sites are being built by the Internet community. For example, Frogans Directory is an independent site that categorizes Frogans addresses submitted directly by publishers worldwide.

When will Frogans open to the general public?

The OP3FT announced during the latest Frogans Technology Conference that it was locking down FSDL 3.0, the language that describes Frogans sites, and that it was starting the spread of Frogans technology within the technical Internet community. We expect the release of a public version of Frogans Player shortly.

About Frogans addresses and Frogans networks

Why should I register my Frogans addresses and Frogans networks now?

Like many things on the Internet, Frogans follows a strict first-come first-served policy.

Like domain names in the 90s, super premium Frogans addresses are available now. But the Frogans address or Frogans network you are thinking about might not be available tomorrow because someone else has registered it or because someone else has registered a name that is so close that the anti-confusion rules might block your registration.

Who is holding a Frogans address or a Frogans network I’m interested in?

The contact information of the holder of a given Frogans address or of a given Frogans network can be accessed using the Whois service offered by the FCR Operator. It also provides administrative and technical information on the registration in the FCR.

This means that your contact information will appear in the Whois service when you register your Frogans address or your Frogans network, unless you are an individual acting in a non-professional capacity and located in a country where the law entitles you to benefit from anonymization in databases.

Which Frogans addresses and Frogans networks have already been registered?

By nature of the Internet, the lists of Frogans addresses and Frogans networks that have been registered in the FCR change all the time. You can download the latest lists by using the Download Repository service offered by the FCR Operator.  The list are updated twice daily.

You can also contact one of the Frogans address watch providers to monitor the registration of specific terms in the FCR.

In which languages can I register Frogans addresses and Frogans networks?

Frogans is natively available in 10 linguistic categories:
– Latin
– Chinese
– Japanese
– Korean
– Arabic
– Cyrillic
– Hebrew
– Devanagari
– Thai
– Greek

This means in particular that you can register your Frogans addresses and Frogans networks in any of these categories and benefit from the same anti-confusion rules that prevent two Frogans addresses that look very similar or mean the same thing to be registered at the same time.

How much does the registration of Frogans addresses and Frogans networks cost?

Prices depend on the currency you are using: you can shop in US Dollars or shop in Euros.

Please feel free to contact us for bulk registration in the FCR or for the management of your existing portfolio of Frogans names.

Can I resell my Frogans addresses and Frogans networks?

Holders of Frogans addresses and Frogans networks can transfer them to another person or entity without any restriction. Transfers can be complimentary or paid for at a price agreed between buyer and seller, pretty much the same way domain names are transferred today.

How are my Frogans addresses and Frogans networks protected?

Frogans names are protected against a wide range of issues:

– Theft of digital assets: the rules for transfer of Frogans names to a third party are more secure than those for domain names so it is very unlikely your Frogans portfolio is stolen in the Frogans Core Registry.

– Acquisition by a major player in order to smother the Frogans project: the Frogans Core Registry is part of the endowment of the OP3FT, a foundation that cannot be acquired.

– Regulatory and legal issues: The OP3FT has signed contracts with ICANN, the global organization responsible for coordinating the Internet’s naming system. Critical issues frequently raised concerning the Web, such as the geographical location of content publishers and Internet users, are resolved via a unique policy applicable to all users of Frogans technology and compliant with the laws in each country (https://www.frogans.org/en/resources/ftup/access.html).

What is the relationship between Frogans addresses and domain names, and between Frogans networks and top level domains (TLDs)?

Frogans addresses have nothing in common with domain names: their are used to identify Frogans sites, never to identify Web sites or register Email addresses.

Holding a Frogans network allows to completely brand Frogans addresses on both sides of the * symbol. Holders can distribute individual Frogans address within that network with absolute pricing freedom.
